Luna’s Birthday

joni | March 31, 2010

It was Luna’s birthday on the 23rd and the office staff surprised her with a blueberry cheesecake.

(Luna’s picture has been removed to protect her privacy. And I’m not kidding.)

Weekly Gratefulness List (March 21 to 27, 2010)

joni | March 30, 2010

I can think of a number of adjectives to describe my first week in Shanghai.

interesting
challenging
frustrating
cold
busy
nostalgic
chaotic

In any case, it is undeniable that being given the opportunity to come back to China for a few weeks is something to be grateful for and I am quite determined to enjoy my stay as much as I can.
One week [...]

The Quest for the Elusive Lumpiang Shanghai

joni | March 23, 2010

Though lumpia or spring rolls are definitely Chinese in origin, lumpiang Shanghai are interestingly not really from Shanghai. Or so they say. Thus, I was very surprised to see lumpiang Shanghai among the dishes served for breakfast. Lesson learned: do not judge a lumpia by its cover.

joni | March 22, 2010

Weekly Gratefulness List (March 14 to 20, 2010)

joni | March 21, 2010

joni | March 14, 2010

I was writing about the Chinese currency for my report and came across this interview. He makes a lot of sense.

Weekly Gratefulness List (March 7 to 13, 2010)

joni | March 13, 2010

Two major things for this week:
– all technical stuff leading to the defense taken care of
March 19 is the Defense Date. I am both excited and very nervous. Finally, finally, finally!
– most details for Shanghai trip ironed out
I think I am most looking forward to the xiao long bao.

Baby Triz is 3 years old on March 5! I joined the birthday dinner at Dulcinea, Greenbelt 1.

The Joy of Writing

joni | March 8, 2010

Two days after I released my novel+essay, Ms. Marj, my literary mommy sent me this poem via Facebook.
The Joy of Writing
By Wisława Szymborska
Why does this written doe bound through these written woods?
For a drink of written water from a spring
whose surface will xerox her soft muzzle?
Why does she lift her head; does she hear something?
Perched [...]
