It’s the third week in a row that I only have the gratefulness list as entries here, testament to my lazy-busy combo. *sighs
This week has been good for me because:
– I feel like my Chinese has really been improving *rejoice rejoice. Weeks of being in formal Chinese classes are finally paying off.
– I bought two [...]

Following Paul Stephen Lim’s lead, I had some of my writings analyzed by the website, “I Write Like.” Here are the results:
I started with the first few paragraphs from my novel. Apparently, I write like Chuck Palahniuk. Haven’t read him but maybe I should start. I must remember to request his books from Wella. So [...]

It has been an uneventful week, which is something to be grateful for in itself. Also, I am thankful for:
– the time (uh, me having made the time) for my Mandarin lessons, both in and out of class.
– Plus! Yummy dinner care of generous classmates last Friday (beef and mushroom from Vince, crabs from Gladys, [...]

This week’s list is going to seem like an update of sorts. Oh well.
– Chinese lessons
I’ve had two sessions of my Mandarin lessons. The lessons are light enough to not be overwhelming. At the same time it provides me with enough new words to make things a bit more exciting. Plus, the lessons give me [...]

Technically, a part of this post should have been included on last week’s list. Specifically one-half of the last weekend, which had been most gratifying in its simplicity.
– Saturday morning was spent running errands at DLSU, returning my toga and getting a copy of my class pictures. I also dropped off the hard copies of [...]

–Instead of a DLSU Press, the university now has the Academic Publications Office (APO) which partners with publishers for (what else?) the school’s publishing needs. The way I understand it, APO acts like an agent of sorts in that it becomes the middleman between the writer and the publisher. Last Saturday, I sent a soft copy [...]

My colleague Mark and I braved the Shanghai cold one night to have dinner at XinTianDi and check out the famed shikumen museum. (A shikumen is a traditional Shanghai house.) We took pictures of the bedroom before we saw the “no camera” sign. Ha!

I found out about Taikang Lu from a list of recommended tourist places to visit from the hotel. I googled it and decided it was worth checking out. I loved it!!
Along Taikang Lu is an area called Tianzifang, an artsy-fartsy compound with boutiques, coffee shops, and photo and painting galleries. Definitely commercial and touristy, but [...]

Week 2 of my China trip saw me getting more accustomed to the place: the weather, the language, the people, etc. I regained my confidence enough to explore the city on my own, talk to people in Chinese again, and just enjoy China as much as I could. The gradual warming weather has been helping [...]
