Weekly Gratefulness List (August 8 to 14, 2010)

joni | August 17, 2010

The past week was so busy I could not even think! So. I am thankful for
–my first mooncake for the year (c/o Akoh)
–having all (ok, maybe most) of my GRE-related books within reach. I should take a picture of them one day.
–freelance writing project which would make what was left of my life (not so [...]

Weekly Gratefulness List (July 18 to 24, 2010)

joni | July 26, 2010

It has been an uneventful week, which is something to be grateful for in itself. Also, I am thankful for:
– the time (uh, me having made the time) for my Mandarin lessons, both in and out of class.
– Plus! Yummy dinner care of generous classmates last Friday (beef and mushroom from Vince, crabs from Gladys, [...]

wescrew dinner/pool party

joni | July 12, 2010

It was a triple birthday celebration for Artie, Daniel, and Jing. (Crazy video here!)

Monday Night @ Cotton’s

joni | April 13, 2010

清明节 (Qing Ming Jie), or Tomb-Sweeping Festival, is that day of the year when the Chinese troop to the cemetery to visit the dearly departed and is thus a holiday. It fell on a Monday this year. As luck would have it, I saw an ad for Cotton’s, a bar that offers a 30-something promo [...]

Milk Tea on a Lazy Saturday Afternoon

joni | April 8, 2010

Three weeks, working full-time, might be too short a period to truly get to know a place as dynamic and diverse as Shanghai. To get the most out of my stay, I would always be rushing about, taking in as much of the sights and sounds as I could.  Until one Saturday afternoon (April 3), [...]

Food!

joni | April 5, 2010

I have since given up taking pictures of the yummy food I’ve been spoiling myself with. These are some of my early meals:

The Quest for the Elusive Lumpiang Shanghai

joni | March 23, 2010

Though lumpia or spring rolls are definitely Chinese in origin, lumpiang Shanghai are interestingly not really from Shanghai. Or so they say. Thus, I was very surprised to see lumpiang Shanghai among the dishes served for breakfast. Lesson learned: do not judge a lumpia by its cover.

we screw Christmas Get-Together

joni | December 28, 2009

Like an extended wedding reception, Tere and Eric treated us to dinner at Hap Chan in Mackinley Hill(s?) on December 23. The celebration also doubled as the we screw Christmas get-together.
First, the ever-present group table pictures…
And then come the gift series….
Nuni and the phallic trophy…
Some behind-the-scene shots…
And then we transferred to Starbucks for some coffee [...]
